How To Install A Cupola

Find your roof pitch by nailing two boards together at one end.  Place the boards along each side of the roof peak letting them intersect at the peak as seen in this diagram.  Mark where the boards intersect one another with a pencil or hold the angle firmly with a "C" clamp.
Marking the Base of your Cupola by drawing a vertical center line on the two opposite sides of cupola bottom.  Make sure you did not change the angle and carefully lay the board on the base.  Note they must meet at the lower corners of the base and also meet at the center line where they cross as seen in this first picture. Now draw the cutting line on the base and cut out from each corner to the center line.  When both opposite sides have been cut, the cupola is ready to install.  Note picture #2 shows the boards go beyond the bottom corners and you would therefore need to add a base extension for your cupola.
Preparing your Roof.
First cut and remove part of the ridge cap that will be under your cupola.  By doing so, this allows a better fit for cupola to snugly sit against the roof between the two cut ends of the ridge cap. If cupola is for decoration only, your roof is ready for cupola.

Ventilation
Should you want your cupola to be used to ventilation, cut an opening in the roof along the peak 6" smaller than the width of the cupola SHINGLES AND SHEATHING ONLY.  DO NOT CUT RIDGE OR RAFTERS. Next, cut down each side from the peak maintaining a 3" minimum border inside base of the cupola.

Cupola Installation
Place cupola on roof and set in place.  Make sure it sits level.  Make 3" holes by drilling corners in both of the uncut sides of the cupola base.  See picture.  Fasten cupola to roof with #10 or #12 wood screws of sufficient length to go through the roof boards.  Caulk along where the roof and base meet on the angle sides only.  Fill screw holes and apply 1-2 coats of latex or oil base house paint.
